Sony continues to stay ahead of the increasingly crowded field of mirrorless full-frame cameras with the release of the 61-megapixel Alpha 7R IV. The α7R IV is Sony's highest resolution full-frame camera ever and comes packed with innovations to help photographers achieve their creative visions. A brand new upgraded sensor means that the α7R IV won't lag while taking high-resolution shots, making it a piece of equipment that is sure to rank high on every photographer's list.

“We are continuing to drive innovation, break boundaries and redefine the expectations of digital camera performance,” said Neal Manowitz, deputy president of Imaging Product and Solutions Americas at Sony Electronics. “The new Alpha 7R IV combines medium format-level image quality with high-speed shooting, extremely fast focusing and an extensive list of upgrades to design, connectivity and usability. This will allow professional photographers, videographers and all other types of creators to capture content in ways that were simply not possible before.”

Key among the innovations is Sony's new Exmor R CMOS image sensor. Its back-illuminated design allows for high sensitivity and low noise, even at a high pixel count. Combined with the latest BIONZ X image processing engine, the α7R IV has a 15-stop dynamic range at low ISO sensitivity and can still shoot at 10 fps. This will be particularly enticing for wildlife and action photographers, as they'll be able to capture quick movements in unheard-of detail.

One advantage of the camera's 61 megapixels is that it gives the ability to crop down to APS-C size while still maintaining an extraordinary 26.2 megapixels. This remarkable achievement gives even greater flexibility in the field. Images are also crisper than ever thanks to advances in autofocus. AF tracking has also been improved and the new sensor has wide and high-density AF coverage with 567 phase-detection AF points. Additionally, pet and portrait photographers will be happy to hear that real-time eye AF works with both humans and animals.

Those working in video will be pleased to see improvements aimed at creating even more professional footage. Not only does the Alpha 7R IV allow for 4K video recording across the full width of the image sensor, it comes with some impressive audio and focus enhancements. In a first, real-time Eye AF is supported for video, while touch tracking on the LCD monitor allows for persistent focus. Clear sound recording is easier than ever thanks to the new ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone and XLR Adaptor Kit which pair with the camera's Multi Interface Shoe.

Pre-orders for the Sony α7R IV, which costs $3,498, begins on July 18, 2019, with estimated shipping in mid-September. Sony is also releasing a host of accessories to enhance the Alpha 7R IV, including the digital shotgun microphone ($348) and adaptor kit ($598), as well as a new vertical grip ($398).
